Migration: intracontinental

Verbreitungskarte von Sphyrapicus thyroideus Largely resident; but some migratory movements; and also post-breeding dispersal to lower elevations. Leaves British Columbia in early Sept, some not until mid-Oct; E race nataliae more migratory than nominate, moves S to N Mexico, some to as far as Jalisco and Michoacān, in flocks up to c. 12 individuals; females probably migrate farther S than males. Return passage from Mar or earlier; arrival on breeding grounds mid-Mar to Apr in Oregon, mid-Apr in British Columbia, from early Apr in Colorado; males earlier than females. Casual records E of range, E to Minnesota, Illinois, Louisiana, mostly in spring.   (del Hoyo J, Elliott A, Sargatal J (eds), 2002)
