Buteo lagopus

Migratory, with breeding range and winter quarters usually quite separate. Date, duration and distance of migration can vary with southward extent of snow cover and abundance of rodents in breeding range; in certain years, some birds fly further S than normal winter quarters. In Europe and Asia most birds leave breeding areas from mid-Sept to early Nov, remaining in winter quarters Nov-Mar; birds return to breeding areas from late Apr to late May, although when food supply scant may make extensive nomadic movements on arrival; may also make movements in winter quarters, e.g. leaving areas with prolonged show cover.
