nocturnal migration |
A partial migrant to Central America and the West Indies, with sporadic records of birds wintering almost
throughout the breeding range. A summer visitor to Alaska, but a few regularly winter along the coasts of
Unalanaska and Shumagin Isalnds (Aleutians and Alaska Peninsula); some winter also on the coasts and in the
interior of British Columbia, South Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and Washington State. The main wintering
grounds are the southern half of USA, Central America south to Panama, and the West Indies south to Trinidad.
Although there are no breeding records in the Bahamas, a few birds regularly oversummer on New Providence
and other islands there. Non-breeding migrants visit the West Indies-Guatemala and Panama from September to
early April, and Trinidad from mid October to late April. In autumn migrants coast south along the shores of
Lake Michigan at a peak rate of 12 per hour, and conversely in spring they move north on the west shore of Lake
Huron at a rate of up to 15 birds per hour (Salyer and Lagler 1946). Migrants are common along the Atlantic
seaboard. (Fry CH, Fry K, Harris A, 1992)
